Finding Cover Assets - Strategies

How do ya'll find high-resolution covers and assets? Got any tips?

Here are a few of mine:
  • Use Google's size filter. When searching for images you can click the "Search tools" link at the top then select "Size"->"Larger than..." to make Google only return images that are of a high-enough resolution. I usually use 2MP when looking for a cover.
  • Use Google's "Search by image" feature. If you find a lower resolution version of an asset you want (or one that has too much JPEG compression), try searching by that image. You can either click the "Search by image" link on the right (above the "Visit page" and "View image" buttons), or you can go to the Google image search page and click the camera to the right of the search bar. Paste in a URL or upload.
  • Check if the game has a media/press section on its website. Sometimes you can find high resolution screenshots and logos.
  • Get fonts from the game's website. Sometimes games will use the same fonts on their websites that they use in game. If you know how (with browser debug/dev tools), you can pull these from their website.
  • Check the manual. If you can find a PDF of the game's manual, sometimes they contain high-resolution images.
  • Check the game files. Sometimes the game will contain images, fonts, sounds etc. that you can easily use. Steam stores games files at "{steam-installation-directory}\steamapps\common\" and sometimes "\steamapps\{username}\".

about fonts, I use the "WhatFont" Chrome extension. It finds the name of any font in the webpage you're currently in.
